| Michael Aspel - Television presenter and British journalist, Michael Terence Aspel was born in Battersea, London, in 1933. Following a stint as a journalist on the Cardiff and Western Mail, Michael Aspel’s television break came as a news reader for the BBC which made him one of the most well known faces on television as a regular news reader during the 1960s and 1970s.
He presented programmes such as Family Favourites, Aspel and Company, the Antiques Roadshow, This Is Your Life and Crackerjack and was one of the most prominent television personalities of his time. In This Is Your Life, he replaced Eamonn Andrews and went on to anchor this show until its end in 2003. In the meantime he presented a series of television shows and programmes such as the gameshow Blockbusters, the supernatural mysteries series Strange But True and the Antiques Roadshow for the BBC.
Michael Aspel received the OBE for his contribution to British television and was also nominated the Personality of the Year for Variety Club TV and Television times. He also had the added honour of being chosen for the Royal Television Society Hall of Fame because of his exceptional contribution to television.
An ardent supporter of cancer research, Michael Aspel announced his retirement in 2007. He was diagnosed with Non Hodgkin Lymphoma in 2004. |
